Carrier screening is not just about one person. It helps couples understand whether they have an increased chance of having a child with certain inherited genetic conditions.
One of the most common questions we hear at Lumi Health is: Why is the female partner tested first?
At Lumi Health, the right pathway depends on which carrier screening test you choose. In this article, we focus on the Standard Bulk Billed Carrier Screening Test.
Any biological female over the age of 18 who is pregnant or planning for pregnancy is tested first for the three most common genetic conditions in Australia: cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy and fragile X syndrome.
Lumi’s Standard Carrier Screening screens for three genes linked to these three conditions by using a cheek swab to collect a DNA sample.
Females assigned at birth are tested first because of how the three conditions are inherited, and provide the most cost-effective pathway of carrier screening:
With Lumi’s Standard Carrier Screening, the male reproductive partner is tested if their female partner is found to be a carrier for cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy. If the male partner is tested beforehand, or at the same time under the Standard three condition screening, this will not be covered by Medicare, and an out-of-pocket cost may apply. 2
If the female partner is not identified as a carrier, partner testing is usually not needed. Similarly, if she is a carrier for fragile X syndrome, partner testing is usually not required for fragile X because of the difference in the inheritance pattern.
Yes, but there is an out-of-pocket cost.
You can also choose a different test type, discover Lumi’s Extended and Comprehensive Carrier Screening options designed for couples. Both partners provide a cheek swab each and receive one combined couples report.
Male partner testing is necessary only when it helps to clarify the couple’s combined reproductive risk.
With Lumi’s Standard Carrier Screening, the female is tested first. The male partner is tested only if needed and will only be Medicare eligible if his partner is first found to be a carrier for cystic fibrosis or spinal muscular atrophy.
If the male partner is tested outside this Medicare pathway for the Standard condition screen, an out-of-pocket cost will apply.
If you are planning a pregnancy or are already pregnant, starting early can make the process much simpler. It gives you more time to fully understand your results, consider your next steps and avoid any delays if partner testing is needed.

Confused about the difference between Carrier Screening and NIPT? Carrier screening looks at the prospective parent’s genetics to understand the chance of passing on certain inherited conditions, while NIPT looks at a specific pregnancy to screen for certain chromosomal conditions in the baby.
